What is a Synchro?
Synchro control transformers are electromechanical devices that produce a single phase voltage magnitude, which is proportional to the sine of the angle of rotation of its rotor in relation to the stator magnetic field. The concept of the Synchro control transformer is the same as the Synchro Transmitter. The airgap flux is uniformly distributed around the rotor due to the cylindrical type of the Synchro Control Transformer.


Where are Synchros used? 

Synchros are used in many applications for Military and Aviation, such as weapon systems, communication systems, underwater detection systems, and navigation systems.


  What are the advantages of using a Synchro?

  • Synchro’s have a low failure rate.
  • Synchros and resolvers have a very long life expectancy as they are inductive devices.
  • As soon as transmission is engaged, the Synchro will align to the correct positioning and therefore is self-synchronising.
  • No mechanical stops.
  • A Synchro transmitter can control more than one Synchro receiver.
  • The ease of which the power factor can be controlled. An overexcited synchronous motor having a leading power factor can be operated in parallel with induction motors having lagging power factor, thereby improving the power factor of the supply system.
  • The speed is constant and independent of the load.

  What are the disadvantages of using a Synchro?

  • The cost per kilowatt is generally higher than that of an induction motor. 
  • For rotor excitation a d.c. supply is required.      
  • For starting and synchronising the motor some arrangement must be provided.

How do Synchros work?

The turning of the Synchro transmitter shaft converts the mechanical input into an electrical signal. Two Synchro receivers can receive this input through the interconnecting wiring. As the receiver shafts rotate in response to the electrical signal from the transmitter the dials attached to the shafts indicate the transmitted information.


Are there different types of Synchros?

Synchros can be split into two group.

Torque Synchros :

  • Transmitters (CG)
  • Differentials (CD)
  • Receivers (CR)

Control Synchro’s:

  • Transmitters (CG)
  • Differentials (CD)
  • Control transformers (CT)
  • Resolvers (CS)
  • Linear transformers (LT)


 How are Synchros grouped?

There are seven basic functional classes:






Torque Transmitter


Mechanical input to rotor (rotor energized from AC source.)

Electrical output from stator representing angular position of rotor to TDX, TDR, or TR.

Control Transmitter


Same as TX

Same as TX except it is supplied to CDX or CT.

Torque Differential


Mechanical input to rotor, electrical input to stator from TX or another TDX.

Electrical output from rotor representing algebraic sum or difference between rotor angle and angle represented by electrical input to TR, TDR, or another TDX.

Control Differential


Same as TDX except electrical input is from CX or another CDX

Same as TDX except output to CT or another CDX.

Torque Receiver


Electrical input to stator from TX or TDX (Rotor energised from AC source.)

Mechanical output from rotor note: rotor has mechanical inertia damper.

Torque Differential


Electrical input to stator from TX or TDX, another electrical input to rotor from TX or TDX.)

Mechanical output from rotor representing algebraic sum or difference between angles represented by electrical inputs. Has inertia damper.

Control Transformer


Electrical input stator from CX or CDX, mechanical input to rotor.

Electrical output from rotor proportional to the size of the angle between rotor position and angle represented by electrical input to stator. Called error signal.
